Dow goes 2-0 at Okemos Quad

OKEMOS — Dow High went 2-0 at the rain-shortened Okemos tennis quad Tuesday, beating Okemos 6-2 and Holly 5-1 to improve to 5-0 this year.

Michael Szabo went 2-0 at No. 1 singles for the Chargers, while Varun Shanker followed suit at No. 2 singles, and Dow’s No. 4 singles player Daniel Zhang was also 2-0.

Sweeping their doubles matches for Dow were Spencer Bouck and Sagar Kamaraju at No. 2, while the third and fourth doubles flights of the Holly match had to be cancelled due to weather. However, the No. 3 doubles team of J.J. Kirkman and Noah Nichols won their match 6-1, 6-1 over Mark Lunetta and Aadi Nalla of Okemos, while Dow’s Ryan Killmaster and Gopal Parasathary earned a 6-2, 6-2 win over Okemos’s Daniel Johnson and Avi Pasula.

“I feel very good about today,” said Dow coach Terry Schwartzkopf. “Two of our losses were substitute players who stepped in and gave their all, and the third was a hard-fought loss at No. 1 doubles.

“To see a sophomore and freshman compete with two seasoned seniors and fight to a virtual standstill was amazing,” he added of freshman Tyler Conrad and his partner at No. 1 doubles, sophomore Aditya Middha, who dropped a 7-6 (5), 1-6, 10-7 decision to Okemos’s Parth Redey and Kartikeya Kandula.

“I see a unified team supportive of each other and driven for success,” Schwartzkopf added. “We have a lot of room for growth, but the journey looks to be an exciting one.”

Conrad and Middha won their other match, 6-1, 6-1 over Holly’s Jacob Cavender and Xavier Glass.

The Chargers travel to the Ann Arbor Invitational on Friday.
