HASLETT — Shorthanded and trailing at halftime, Midland stormed back in the second half to beat Haslett 17-9 in nonleague boys’ lacrosse on Monday.
Vi Lobo and Ryan Sisitki each scored five goals to lead the Cavaliers, who trailed 3-0 in the first quarter and 7-5 at halftime.
“I told the boys that I’m going to give out 24 game balls (to everyone on the team),” said Midland coach Joe Stadelmaier, whose team was missing six players, four of them starters. “Because we were so shorthanded, everybody stepped up. We played our best game of the year.”
Midland took a 12-9 lead by the end of the third quarter and then pulled away in the fourth.
“At halftime, I told (my players), ‘It’s just a game. Let’s have fun out there,’ and they did,” Stadelmaier said.
Jared Zahn scored three goals, Quinton Bortel had two goals and four assists, Jon Jardis had one goal and three assists, and defenseman Cay Wagner also scored once.
Alex Farrell had three assists and Sisitki two assists.
Chase Keilitz had 12 save in goal and Zac Donoghue won 24 faceoffs, losing only one faceoff all night.
Midland is 9-2 and will host No. 4 Hartland on Friday.
“We’ve only played Hartland once before, several years ago. This is a very big game for us,” Stadelmaier said.
